Fire salamanders in danger!
Let's work together to protect the fire salamander from Bsal.
The skin fungus Bsal has been detected in the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park and the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park. It primarily infects fire salamanders, but other native salamander species are also threatened. Severe skin lesions often cause the animals to die within a few days.
Here's what you can do:
-
Thoroughly remove dirt and mud from shoes and tires before and after visiting the forest
-
Disinfect shoes at home and at stations
-
Store shoes warm and dry from time to time
-
Do not leave paths and trails
-
Keep dogs on a leash
-
Observe fire salamanders only from a distance and do not touch them
-
Report fire salamander sightings and dead finds online

Hiking in the quality region
Since 2023, the Edersee region has been certified as a "Quality Region Hiking Germany." Four trails bear the "Quality Trail Hiking Germany" seal, and another has been awarded the "Premium Trail" designation. Quality you can feel in the trail design, orientation, and proximity to nature!
